Step 1: Prepare the rich sauce. In a cast-iron skillet, melt butter over medium heat until it begins to bubble. Take care not to burn the roux as you fully incorporate the flour by whisking it in.
Stir the sauce continuously after adding the whole milk until it thickens enough. To get the right consistency, add more milk if the sauce seems too thick.
